[0:00] Ryan Warwick: We're told the nice car, the big house, the career, the titles, all, all of that is going to satisfy
[0:05] Shannon Warwick: Taking the kids to the dollar store, and they thought they were so rich when you gave them five bucks and said, "Buy anything you want."
[0:10] Ryan Warwick: Many of the conversations we're having, um, are tens to hundreds of millions of dollars.
[0:15] Shannon Warwick: Yes.
[0:16] Ryan Warwick: Now we have an existential crisis. When wealth is transformed into memories through experiences, you get real worth.
[0:23] Shannon Warwick: You gaining the world, but losing your soul.
[0:27] Ryan Warwick: Real worth can be summed up in how we are serving others.
[0:32] Shannon Warwick: The number won't matter if you get to the end, that arbitrary number, that arbitrary finish line, and there is nobody to share it with.
[0:40] Ryan Warwick: No amount of fame, no amount of power, no amount of money will ever satisfy. Find something different. Get off the treadmill.
[0:47] Shannon Warwick: These blessings were not meant to be curses. They were meant to be blessings.
[0:51] Ryan Warwick: Welcome to the Worth Beyond Wealth podcast.
[0:53] Shannon Warwick: Where net worth meets personal worth. I'm Shannon.
[0:56] Ryan Warwick: I'm Ryan. We help families navigate the emotional, relational, and personal realities that money alone can't solve.
[1:03] Shannon Warwick: If you've built wealth but still wonder what it all means, or how to keep your family grounded while protecting your legacy, you're in the right place.
[1:11] Ryan Warwick: We sit down with experts and with you to talk identity, purpose, and connection beyond the balance sheet.
[1:18] Shannon Warwick: Because true wealth isn't measured in dollars. It's measured in the impact we make and the relationships we nurture.
[1:25] Ryan Warwick: So grab a seat.
[1:26] Shannon Warwick: Take a breath.
[1:26] Ryan Warwick: And let's redefine what it means-
[1:28] Shannon Warwick: To be truly wealthy together.
[1:31] Ryan Warwick: This is the Worth Beyond Wealth podcast. Um, I, I wrote, uh, something down that just came to me, because I think back over, over our lifetime, you know, there's, there's not joy in, in a number that sits in an account.
[1:47] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[1:48] Ryan Warwick: But I think that, um,
[1:51] Ryan Warwick: real, real worth, which is one of the things we talk about at RW, is another way of saying fulfilled. And, and in our m- branding campaign, uh, a- as we adjust the branding coming up, the un-
[2:06] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[2:06] Ryan Warwick: ... so we're moving people from unfulfilled-
[2:09] Shannon Warwick: Right
[2:09] Ryan Warwick: ... to fulfilled-
[2:10] Shannon Warwick: Right
[2:10] Ryan Warwick: ... through real worth, through having conversations that maybe challenge or, or can help them, um, identify greater purpose and, and maybe, maybe look at things, uh, a little bit differently to, to-
[2:26] Shannon Warwick: Question their why
[2:27] Ryan Warwick: ... to, you know, find that why. But-
[2:29] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[2:30] Ryan Warwick: ... um, when wealth is transformed into memories through experiences-
[2:35] Shannon Warwick: Right
[2:35] Ryan Warwick: ... you get real worth.
[2:36] Shannon Warwick: There it is.
[2:37] Ryan Warwick: And those
[2:40] Ryan Warwick: memories that we have, the memories of, of going to Yellowstone-
[2:46] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[2:46] Ryan Warwick: ... when, when the kids are little and, and-
[2:49] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[2:49] Ryan Warwick: ... Maddie's saying, uh, I, I think-
[2:51] Shannon Warwick: "You said we were going to the park. Where's the playground equipment?"
[2:53] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. Where's the playground equipment?
[2:54] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[2:54] Ryan Warwick: Right. I, I mean, or, or-
[2:56] Shannon Warwick: I, I-
[2:56] Ryan Warwick: ... walking on a beach and-
[2:57] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[2:57] Ryan Warwick: ... and having that picture of her next to Grandpa and, you know, those, those things are-
[3:01] Shannon Warwick: Taking the kids to the dollar store, and they thought they were so rich when you gave them five bucks and said, "Buy anything you want." It was like, you know, we, we couldn't have done better.
[3:10] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, yeah.
[3:12] Shannon Warwick: Hmm.
[3:12] Ryan Warwick: So it's, it's interesting. I mean, real... r- being fulfilled and experiencing real worth is-
[3:18] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[3:18] Ryan Warwick: ... um, we could probably talk about that all day.
[3:21] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[3:22] Ryan Warwick: And, and I think m-
[3:24] Ryan Warwick: we would be remiss to say that, that we have, um, some monopoly on the answer. I think this is something we try to approach with a, a great measure of humility because-
[3:39] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[3:39] Ryan Warwick: ... m- people can answer this so many different ways.
[3:42] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[3:43] Ryan Warwick: And, uh-
[3:44] Shannon Warwick: And within the culture of their own home, their own life, right? Because everybody's experiences are different. We all come from different backgrounds, right? So different things form our worldview, and so those answers can look very different.
[3:59] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[4:00] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[4:00] Ryan Warwick: But I think the consistency is that it's not
[4:05] Ryan Warwick: money.
[4:06] Shannon Warwick: It's not the money itself.
[4:07] Ryan Warwick: It's not the money itself.
[4:09] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[4:10] Ryan Warwick: And-
[4:11] Shannon Warwick: There will be people who argue that it is.
[4:15] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, and I think that m- it is for a while. Uh, there is, uh, l- a lot of data-
[4:24] Shannon Warwick: Yep
[4:24] Ryan Warwick: ... and evidence that, that talks about money is fulfilling-
[4:29] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[4:30] Ryan Warwick: ... to a certain point, um, and that point is very low.
[4:35] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[4:35] Ryan Warwick: Uh, a book, uh, I read many years ago talked about, um, once income, at that time the number was something like $200,000 a year-
[4:45] Shannon Warwick: I was gonna say 100, but 200
[4:46] Ryan Warwick: ... it might have been 150-
[4:47] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[4:48] Ryan Warwick: ... um, $150,000 a year-
[4:50] Shannon Warwick: Right
[4:50] Ryan Warwick: ... then all sorts of things skyrocket.
[4:53] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[4:54] Ryan Warwick: Divorce, alcohol, drug abuse.
[4:56] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[4:57] Ryan Warwick: So all sorts of challenges because I think that at a relatively low level of monetary success-
[5:04] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[5:05] Ryan Warwick: ... in, in our world today, people start to seek other things.
[5:09] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[5:09] Ryan Warwick: And I think it creates... What we're seeing is there is a... It creates a massive problem-
[5:16] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[5:17] Ryan Warwick: ... when the thing... And so we all grow up, and we're in America, and we're marketed to, and we're told-
[5:22] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[5:22] Ryan Warwick: ... you know, the nice car, the big house, the, the, the career, the titles, all, all of that is going to satisfy. All of that is-
[5:29] Shannon Warwick: Right
[5:29] Ryan Warwick: ... what we're after. We're gonna go get the best degrees from the best schools and, and do our best and perform our best in sports and-
[5:37] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[5:37] Ryan Warwick: ... and in academics and, and wherever that is, and then we get that success.
[5:41] Shannon Warwick: And that the higher the price tag is, the better the product is, right?
[5:45] Ryan Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[5:46] Shannon Warwick: There's the illusion.
[5:47] Ryan Warwick: But when we get to that success-
[5:50] Shannon Warwick: What then?
[5:50] Ryan Warwick: ... and then-
[5:51] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[5:51] Ryan Warwick: ... we realize we're still not experiencing-
[5:55] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[5:56] Ryan Warwick: ... sustained happiness.
[5:57] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[5:58] Ryan Warwick: Now we have a problem. Now we have an existential crisis.
[6:01] Shannon Warwick: And we've talked about- You and I have talked about, it's interesting, you think, "Well, I'll get to that next thing." And so, okay, maybe you upgrade your car, you upgrade your house, you buy a second property, you buy another vehicle. But all of a sudden now you're maintaining more, and then there's the cost of maintenance, and then there's the time that's involved. And all of a sudden you have stress because there's more to do, more to take care of, but, uh, so do you feel better owning more? And it... I know it's funny when you hear that mo' money, more problems, right? It's just, but it is.
[6:34] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[6:35] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[6:36] Ryan Warwick: Notorious B.I.G.
[6:38] Shannon Warwick: Oh, there you go.
[6:38] Ryan Warwick: I think he said that first.
[6:40] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[6:42] Shannon Warwick: Good quote.
[6:44] Ryan Warwick: Um, uh, jumping back to where you started.
[6:48] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[6:49] Ryan Warwick: You said money-- To answer this question, you said m- money doesn't create the fulfillment, but it comes full circle.
[6:57] Shannon Warwick: Yes.
[6:58] Ryan Warwick: And
[7:01] Ryan Warwick: in, in a, uh, program that, that I've gone through, one of the models is called Five Capitals. And so we all have five things that we are, I... and, and I think we are stewards of. So there's spiritual capital, relational capital, physical capital, intellectual capital-
[7:21] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[7:22] Ryan Warwick: ... and financial capital.
[7:23] Shannon Warwick: Yep.
[7:24] Ryan Warwick: Financial capital is something in that model that is used to, um, influence or leverage the other things.
[7:35] Shannon Warwick: The others, right.
[7:36] Ryan Warwick: So yeah, it, it is a tool.
[7:39] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[7:40] Ryan Warwick: The problem becomes when we think of money as more than a tool.
[7:44] Shannon Warwick: One of the things we were chatting about was, okay, so we have this money, and what are the things around it? I would almost, I would almost venture to guess there's just a, a general lack of, of financial literacy. There's a lack of under- Are we okay? Am I okay? Can I stop? Is this number enough? Maybe at the end of that, there's just some, uh, there, there's ignorance, right? There's, there's a lack of understanding, potentially.
[8:11] Ryan Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[8:12] Shannon Warwick: I don't really understand the money. I don't know how to make it work for me.
[8:17] Ryan Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[8:17] Shannon Warwick: I don't really understand what I even have. And if I did, or if my family did, maybe I could calm down and understand that I am okay. I could slow down-
[8:28] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[8:29] Shannon Warwick: ... if I wanted to.
[8:32] Ryan Warwick: When we sit down with
[8:35] Ryan Warwick: people,
[8:37] Ryan Warwick: um, we just ask really open-ended questions.
[8:41] Shannon Warwick: Mm.
[8:41] Ryan Warwick: And I think to, to, to get to the bottom of that, we don't just dive right into the numbers.
[8:47] Shannon Warwick: You're gonna ask-
[8:48] Ryan Warwick: 'Cause-
[8:48] Shannon Warwick: ... some questions that are surround-
[8:50] Ryan Warwick: And ask deep purpose-based questions-
[8:52] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[8:52] Ryan Warwick: ... you know, surrounding what does fulfillment even look like?
[8:56] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[8:56] Ryan Warwick: And we're gonna shut up and listen. So
[9:02] Ryan Warwick: I, I, in those interactions, wanna talk far less than I speak.
[9:08] Shannon Warwick: Because you want people to understand.
[9:08] Ryan Warwick: Which is not my normal, right?
[9:11] Shannon Warwick: Right. No. I have to often say right, and it's, it's you don't have, you no longer have the floor.
[9:17] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[9:17] Shannon Warwick: Right? Yeah. No. But you're gonna ask, coming full circle when we started the conversation, you're gonna ask about what is real worth to you.
[9:25] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[9:26] Shannon Warwick: Yeah. And then this full circle conversation comes back.
[9:32] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. I mean, what,
[9:35] Ryan Warwick: what are your dreams? What are your goals? What are y- what's your vision? What, what's your purpose? And these are, these are things that-
[9:42] Shannon Warwick: I would say joy, purpose, and peace. Like, these are, you know, right here in the RW experience, joy, purpose, peace.
[9:49] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[9:49] Shannon Warwick: Right? Because a lot of the things that we were just chatting about, they're, they're angsty, and so getting to that real worth, what is it that actually
[9:58] Shannon Warwick: gets to the heart of joy, purpose, and peace in your life? And so how can the money
[10:04] Shannon Warwick: become the tool to feed the joy, the purpose, the peace?
[10:07] Ryan Warwick: How, how can the one capital of money-
[10:09] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[10:09] Ryan Warwick: ... help fund the other capitals?
[10:12] Shannon Warwick: All of the other things. All the other capitals, yeah.
[10:14] Ryan Warwick: And, and it gets back, so we, we talked to, uh, a council the other day if, in an interview for our book.
[10:23] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[10:24] Ryan Warwick: And, uh, and we've been talking a lot about, um, Maslow and-
[10:29] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[10:29] Ryan Warwick: ... but we talked about, hey, what do you, how do you see, um... I'll say this differently. What are the things that contribute to a meaningful life-
[10:39] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[10:40] Ryan Warwick: ... uh, and to, and to happiness? And, and really,
[10:46] Ryan Warwick: ironically, it, it's not money.
[10:48] Shannon Warwick: No, it's not.
[10:49] Ryan Warwick: So it's, he said it's faith, in other words, uh, or, or spirituality-
[10:53] Shannon Warwick: Mm
[10:53] Ryan Warwick: ... a belief in something bigger than yourself.
[10:55] Shannon Warwick: Than yourself.
[10:55] Ryan Warwick: Okay, there we are looking outward.
[10:57] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[10:58] Ryan Warwick: Okay? Not... And boy, I, I, there's a, there's a new book out there, um, that is, is just, is written directly to entrepreneurs saying, "Hey, you gotta find inner peace, uh, by looking inward and-
[11:10] Shannon Warwick: It's all about you
[11:10] Ryan Warwick: ... and going through these three questions and ten things," and-
[11:13] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[11:13] Ryan Warwick: ... it's just, um, it, it, it's horrible. It'll lead people down the path they're already on, and they're just gonna keep spinning out.
[11:20] Shannon Warwick: Well, and I think, you know, let's pause there. So the book is written to who?
[11:24] Ryan Warwick: Entrepreneurs.
[11:25] Shannon Warwick: Right. Is it written to their families or the spouses in any way, shape, or form?
[11:29] Ryan Warwick: Did not seem to be.
[11:30] Shannon Warwick: Interesting.
[11:32] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. And again, in, in our, in our research as we've...
[11:37] Ryan Warwick: Really, I mean, I, uh, I think this is in a terrible spot to say this is somewhat becoming a real passion for us to s- try to speak into the families-
[11:50] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[11:50] Ryan Warwick: ... that are often being left behind or where we're seeing a drift-
[11:57] Shannon Warwick: Mm
[11:57] Ryan Warwick: ... between, um, spouses that are in-
[12:02] Shannon Warwick: Right
[12:03] Ryan Warwick: More, well, uh, exclusively really in the conversations we're having, in very successful situations.
[12:11] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[12:12] Ryan Warwick: Monetarily.
[12:13] Shannon Warwick: Monetarily.
[12:13] Ryan Warwick: Business-wise.
[12:14] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[12:14] Ryan Warwick: You know, the things that we... Again, those things that we're told from the beginning of our lives, and continuously told, "These are the things that you go after for success."
[12:25] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[12:25] Ryan Warwick: "These are the things, you know. Go make a bunch of money, retire by 30 or 40 and, and you'll have a, a great life." And, and why are we not seeing that? That, that's really... It's because everything was about me.
[12:39] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[12:39] Ryan Warwick: So you have to have some- a belief in something bigger than yourself.
[12:42] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[12:42] Ryan Warwick: A cause bigger than yourself.
[12:44] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[12:45] Ryan Warwick: You need a, a intimate relationships and friendships.
[12:48] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[12:48] Ryan Warwick: So we can, we can talk through the Harvard study a little bit.
[12:51] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[12:52] Ryan Warwick: Uh, a recent book was written about, but the number one thing that leads to lasting, sustained happiness in this now, I think, 80-year study-
[13:01] Shannon Warwick: Longevity, yeah, the 80 years-
[13:03] Ryan Warwick: ... is-
[13:03] Shannon Warwick: ... been tracking these folks
[13:04] Ryan Warwick: ... is friendships. It's relationships.
[13:06] Shannon Warwick: Yeah, it's relationship.
[13:07] Ryan Warwick: Um, you know, being able to have an outlet for, uh, you know, non-competitive, uh, sport or play.
[13:13] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[13:14] Ryan Warwick: And then, um, something you can pour into, lifelong learning and, and-
[13:17] Shannon Warwick: Right
[13:17] Ryan Warwick: ... intellectual growth. So it's... M- money isn't there-
[13:21] Shannon Warwick: Right
[13:22] Ryan Warwick: ... at all.
[13:23] Shannon Warwick: We were watching this study, too, on blue zones recently, and that was interesting. Money wasn't part of that either.
[13:29] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[13:29] Shannon Warwick: It was relationships.
[13:30] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[13:31] Shannon Warwick: It was hard work. It was giving. It was community service. It was human connection. It was everything outside of money. So interesting.
[13:40] Ryan Warwick: You know, what we're seeing is a really big need to come into, um, families-
[13:48] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[13:48] Ryan Warwick: ... where
[13:50] Ryan Warwick: the spouse feels-
[13:52] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[13:53] Ryan Warwick: ... less than, um, capable.
[13:56] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[13:57] Ryan Warwick: Perhaps even left out.
[13:59] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[14:00] Ryan Warwick: And-
[14:00] Shannon Warwick: Intimidated, overwhelmed, frightened, confused-
[14:05] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[14:05] Shannon Warwick: ...
[14:07] Shannon Warwick: underappreciated, uninvolved. I mean, there's just an entire... There's a really big-
[14:12] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[14:12] Shannon Warwick: ... vocabulary list.
[14:13] Ryan Warwick: And if you start there-
[14:14] Shannon Warwick: Unpleasant spelling list
[14:15] Ryan Warwick: ...
[14:16] Ryan Warwick: and then
[14:19] Ryan Warwick: a day comes when-
[14:20] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[14:21] Ryan Warwick: ... your kids don't need you as much.
[14:23] Shannon Warwick: That happens.
[14:23] Ryan Warwick: Forced retirement.
[14:24] Shannon Warwick: Forced retirement. Now.
[14:27] Ryan Warwick: You know, now, now you have really a... Again, we're back to that existential crisis, but in, in a slightly different way. Now you're not the entrepreneur who sold or the person who's retiring, and, you know, who- that found a lot of identity in their work.
[14:40] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[14:41] Ryan Warwick: And, um, it's-
[14:42] Shannon Warwick: Right
[14:42] Ryan Warwick: ... it's really a, a different thing. Do you want to speak to that at all?
[14:46] Shannon Warwick: I mean, it's a completely different podcast.
[14:48] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[14:49] Shannon Warwick: How long do you have?
[14:51] Ryan Warwick: Um, as long as you want.
[14:53] Shannon Warwick: Perfect. Okay.
[14:54] Ryan Warwick: And maybe you just... I mean, you, you're probably right for today. It's, it's probably not something to go into, but it is-
[15:00] Shannon Warwick: But it does-
[15:01] Ryan Warwick: It is a real thing that we're seeing-
[15:02] Shannon Warwick: Yes
[15:02] Ryan Warwick: ... a lot of.
[15:03] Shannon Warwick: And, and it goes in with this, uh, fulfillment outside of financial success. So we'll save it.
[15:09] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[15:09] Shannon Warwick: We'll put a pin in it.
[15:11] Ryan Warwick: So s- so I wanna say something on financial success.
[15:14] Shannon Warwick: Yes.
[15:16] Ryan Warwick: I, I like how one author put it. He called it funded contentment.
[15:23] Shannon Warwick: Oh, that is-
[15:25] Ryan Warwick: Okay? So-
[15:25] Shannon Warwick: ... good
[15:26] Ryan Warwick: ... so now we're talking about-
[15:28] Shannon Warwick: You should get that, like, tattooed or something, like, on your fore- with the... It would be really good marketing.
[15:32] Ryan Warwick: On the forehead? Yeah.
[15:33] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[15:33] Ryan Warwick: So funded contentment is, is really the ability to underwrite a meaningful life-
[15:39] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[15:39] Ryan Warwick: ... however that is defined, okay? So again-
[15:41] Shannon Warwick: Say it again
[15:42] Ryan Warwick: ... the ability to underwrite a meaningful life, however that is defined. Okay, so as we're walking through with people,
[15:53] Ryan Warwick: um, I've oft- I've often used, um, a different analogy, I, I think, to, to get across the same point.
[16:01] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[16:01] Ryan Warwick: Um, so I, I've, I've said, "Hey, I've, I've seen, I've seen both," and there are people that have, um we'll just make up a, a, a number. Uh, uh, take two people with a $5 million portfolio.
[16:15] Shannon Warwick: Okay.
[16:16] Ryan Warwick: So a portfolio being just the collection of all of their assets and, that they have to, uh-
[16:21] Shannon Warwick: Right
[16:21] Ryan Warwick: ... live off of-
[16:22] Shannon Warwick: Right
[16:22] Ryan Warwick: ... in, in, in their retirement.
[16:24] Shannon Warwick: Okay.
[16:24] Ryan Warwick: Okay. So if, if one person needs $50,000 a year to fund their contentment-
[16:33] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[16:33] Ryan Warwick: ...
[16:35] Ryan Warwick: that portfolio, that, that
[16:38] Ryan Warwick: pot of assets is never going to be stressed.
[16:41] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[16:41] Ryan Warwick: They're taking 1%, a really easy. That thing's just gonna grow, grow, grow. So I say-
[16:48] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[16:48] Ryan Warwick: ... you know, they both have a Porsche, or they both have a Ferrari.
[16:52] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[16:52] Ryan Warwick: And that person's driving their Ferrari around, uh, some, some downtown Eagle streets-
[17:00] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[17:00] Ryan Warwick: ... at, uh, 20 miles an hour. They're taking the turns really slow. And, and the other person, though, if you have a-
[17:07] Shannon Warwick: Not fun
[17:07] Ryan Warwick: ... $5 million portfolio-
[17:08] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[17:09] Ryan Warwick: ... but, but they need $700,000 a year.
[17:12] Shannon Warwick: Oh, okay.
[17:13] Ryan Warwick: Okay, so, so now, now we're talking... Now I have to do the, the math. I mean, we're, we're at, like, 12%, uh, distribution. Um-
[17:22] Shannon Warwick: Are you doing this in your head right now, this math?
[17:25] Ryan Warwick: I, I did, but it's probably wrong.
[17:28] Shannon Warwick: That's impressive.
[17:29] Ryan Warwick: Thank you.
[17:30] Shannon Warwick: Very welcome.
[17:30] Ryan Warwick: So, you know, but, but the point is, if you need that to fund contentment-
[17:35] Shannon Warwick: Right
[17:35] Ryan Warwick: ... okay, you still-
[17:36] Shannon Warwick: So I need $50,000 versus $700,000.
[17:38] Ryan Warwick: So $5 million is, is, is a Porsche, right?
[17:40] Shannon Warwick: Right, right.
[17:40] Ryan Warwick: We're, we're describing that as, as a-
[17:42] Shannon Warwick: Right, that's a Porsche. Okay
[17:43] Ryan Warwick: ... it's a great amount of money for-
[17:45] Shannon Warwick: Right
[17:45] Ryan Warwick: ... for most people. But this second Porsche is being driven up Bogus Basin Road-... at 80 miles an hour.
[17:54] Shannon Warwick: Okay.
[17:54] Ryan Warwick: Okay, so there's-
[17:55] Shannon Warwick: We're stressing it a little bit, reasonably
[17:55] Ryan Warwick: ... so we're stressing it. It may not fail. It may not crash.
[18:00] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[18:01] Ryan Warwick: But we're stressing it, okay?
[18:03] Shannon Warwick: Okay.
[18:03] Ryan Warwick: So, so I think this idea of funded contentment is- Each person has to define, uh, each family has to define, how am I going to live a meaningful life?
[18:16] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[18:17] Ryan Warwick: And then
[18:19] Ryan Warwick: we back into, so that's what this, this real worth conversation is about.
[18:23] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[18:23] Ryan Warwick: I mean, these are... And sometimes this is multiple meetings. I mean-
[18:27] Shannon Warwick: Sure
[18:27] Ryan Warwick: ... we're, we're trying to draw out information, and, and husband and wife may not have ever talked about this before.
[18:33] Shannon Warwick: I'm gonna, I'm gonna guess they, they, they didn't. I mean, they may have had superficial conversations, right? But then getting to, like, the meat of this-
[18:40] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[18:40] Shannon Warwick: ... getting to the heart of this.
[18:42] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, those conversations may have-
[18:43] Shannon Warwick: And they may differ. You... She may be... Well, let, let, let's, let's turn it around. We were gonna say she's the one who wants to drive at 20 miles an hour. Maybe he wants to go 20 miles an hour, and she wants to go 80.
[18:54] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[18:54] Shannon Warwick: A bogus rate.
[18:55] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[18:55] Shannon Warwick: Let's say that. And, and we've never really talked about it.
[18:59] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[19:00] Shannon Warwick: So it's really helpful to go through this process with a good guide, to sit down, to, to be heard, to have somebody helping navigate those conversations-
[19:10] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[19:10] Shannon Warwick: ... kinda get, get really to this place of what, what is the,
[19:16] Shannon Warwick: what is the joy, the purpose, and the peace, and how do we help you get there-
[19:21] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[19:22] Shannon Warwick: ... past this, quote-unquote, financial success?
[19:25] Ryan Warwick: Because,
[19:27] Ryan Warwick: a- and we're gonna have Bruce on, uh, hopefully we get, get together next week and-
[19:32] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[19:32] Ryan Warwick: ... and talk with Bruce. But one of the things he has, has said, uh, in almost every conversation I, I hear, uh-
[19:42] Shannon Warwick: And give a little bit of context. Bruce is?
[19:45] Ryan Warwick: So Bruce is, uh,
[19:48] Ryan Warwick: a, uh, expert in advanced, uh, estate planning strategies-
[19:52] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[19:52] Ryan Warwick: ... and works with-
[19:53] Shannon Warwick: The nitty-gritty
[19:53] Ryan Warwick: ... uh, attorneys and accountants all over the country.
[19:56] Shannon Warwick: Right, and with families that maybe even are a little disgruntled, kind of difficult situations-
[20:01] Ryan Warwick: Sure
[20:01] Shannon Warwick: ... potentially.
[20:02] Ryan Warwick: Sure.
[20:02] Shannon Warwick: Often. Okay.
[20:03] Ryan Warwick: But there are really two things you can do with money.
[20:06] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[20:07] Ryan Warwick: Do you know what that is?
[20:07] Shannon Warwick: What?
[20:08] Ryan Warwick: I'm, I'm asking if you wanna guess.
[20:10] Shannon Warwick: Spend it.
[20:11] Ryan Warwick: Okay.
[20:12] Shannon Warwick: Or die and give it away.
[20:14] Ryan Warwick: That's pretty good.
[20:15] Shannon Warwick: Thank you.
[20:15] Ryan Warwick: 'Cause you can spend it or you can give it, right? So whether that's when you die, it-
[20:21] Shannon Warwick: You were nicer. You said give it away. I said you're gonna die first.
[20:25] Ryan Warwick: Sure. But-
[20:25] Shannon Warwick: We could give it away before we die
[20:26] Ryan Warwick: ... you can give it away before you die.
[20:28] Shannon Warwick: That's-
[20:28] Ryan Warwick: But, but it's-
[20:29] Shannon Warwick: ... that's great
[20:29] Ryan Warwick: ... it's literally I'm going to spend it.
[20:32] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[20:32] Ryan Warwick: Okay, what do we wanna s- spend it on? Or, or we can give it. We can give it to our family. We can give it to charities.
[20:39] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm. I'm not gonna give it to the kids.
[20:41] Ryan Warwick: So, so we can give it to people.
[20:41] Shannon Warwick: They don't need that right now.
[20:42] Ryan Warwick: We can give it to charities.
[20:44] Shannon Warwick: Yes.
[20:45] Ryan Warwick: Or we can give it to the government.
[20:47] Shannon Warwick: Well-
[20:48] Ryan Warwick: I mean, there really, when it r- really comes down to it, there-
[20:51] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[20:51] Ryan Warwick: ... aren't that many choices-
[20:54] Shannon Warwick: Right
[20:54] Ryan Warwick: ... with our money.
[20:55] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[20:55] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. It's, it's crazy.
[20:58] Shannon Warwick: I mean, when you put it that way-
[20:59] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[20:59] Shannon Warwick: ... you know, we're just killing ourselves for what?
[21:02] Ryan Warwick: So, so we, we have to find, in these conversations to identify fulfillment, what-
[21:10] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[21:10] Ryan Warwick: ... will create a fulfilling-
[21:13] Shannon Warwick: Joy, purpose, and peace. I keep going back to that because that's-
[21:15] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[21:15] Shannon Warwick: ... on the real worth with the Airbnb experience. Yeah.
[21:17] Ryan Warwick: Yes. Joy, purpose, and peace in your life.
[21:20] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[21:21] Ryan Warwick: Everything should be directed at that.
[21:24] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[21:26] Ryan Warwick: And
[21:28] Ryan Warwick: most of the time, that involves a, a healthy dose of looking outside of ourselves.
[21:35] Shannon Warwick: So a healthy dose of reality.
[21:36] Ryan Warwick: Of... Well, no, of, uh,
[21:39] Ryan Warwick: sure.
[21:39] Shannon Warwick: Sure.
[21:40] Ryan Warwick: Reality, giving-
[21:42] Shannon Warwick: In that you are not the end-all be-all of the universe, looking outside of ourselves, giving.
[21:46] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, I think that's the lie of the humanistic philosophy that was also coming out of this book is-
[21:52] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[21:53] Ryan Warwick: ... yeah, you, you n- will never find-
[21:55] Shannon Warwick: You can do that
[21:55] Ryan Warwick: ... joy-
[21:56] Shannon Warwick: Right
[21:56] Ryan Warwick: ... purpose, and peace-
[21:58] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[21:58] Ryan Warwick: ... lasting, sustainable joy-
[22:00] Shannon Warwick: Right
[22:00] Ryan Warwick: ... purpose and peace-
[22:01] Shannon Warwick: Right
[22:01] Ryan Warwick: ... by looking to yourself.
[22:03] Shannon Warwick: We're saying beyond the moment.
[22:05] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[22:06] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[22:06] Ryan Warwick: Okay. So we've been talking a lot about helping people or j- or the challenges around finding fulfillment-
[22:13] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[22:14] Ryan Warwick: ... beyond financial success, and then how do people find meaning and purpose in their life.
[22:19] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[22:19] Ryan Warwick: And I just... You know, we've been talking around it. I just wanna make sure we get in some of these, um, notes that I think are just, uh, maybe put a, put a bow around some of the, some of the stuff we've been talking about.
[22:32] Shannon Warwick: Let's do. Yeah, we'll put a bow on it.
[22:32] Ryan Warwick: And we'll, we'll put a bow on and just wrap it up.
[22:35] Shannon Warwick: Embellish it.
[22:36] Ryan Warwick: Um-
[22:37] Shannon Warwick: Bring it home
[22:38] Ryan Warwick: ... so the striver's curse.
[22:41] Shannon Warwick: Ooh.
[22:41] Ryan Warwick: People who strive to be excellent at what they do often wind up finding their inevitable decline terrifying, their successes increasingly unsatisfying, and their relationships lacking. So, you know, back to this idea of if it's all about-
[22:59] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[22:59] Ryan Warwick: ... success and performance and, and building up
[23:04] Ryan Warwick: money, which is the same as saying building up a, a business worth-
[23:09] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[23:09] Ryan Warwick: ... a certain amount, um,
[23:12] Ryan Warwick: I just think it's,
[23:14] Ryan Warwick: uh, that's a really interesting, uh, w- way of further putting it because we all have decline, right?
[23:22] Shannon Warwick: It almost sounds like we're saying maybe somebody could... would think we're saying money is bad-
[23:27] Ryan Warwick: Sure
[23:27] Shannon Warwick: ... or building wealth is bad, or having goals and being driven is bad, and that is absolutely not what we're saying because those are all giftings, right? To be able to be good in business, to, um, have a mind for investments, to be disciplined in your spending and your saving-
[23:44] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[23:44] Shannon Warwick: ... and your... These are all really great attributes, right?
[23:48] Ryan Warwick: Yep.
[23:49] Shannon Warwick: I think what, what we really wanna make sure that people understand that we're saying is, go for it, right?
[23:55] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[23:55] Shannon Warwick: But have a healthy mindset around it so that, um, these blessings were not meant to be curses.
[24:05] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. Um-
[24:07] Shannon Warwick: Did you draw a graph? That looks like a graph that you drew.
[24:10] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, it's a, it's a good picture.
[24:13] Ryan Warwick: Um-
[24:15] Shannon Warwick: I just think it's fabulous that you have all of these quotes from Cicero and a graph. I have, um, scribble that I'm trying to read.
[24:23] Ryan Warwick: So, um,
[24:26] Ryan Warwick: devote the back half of your life to serving with wisdom. Share the ideas you believe are most important. Excellence is its own reward. And I think that's, that's the thing, like, uh, it just carries on to this. So dedication to service-
[24:42] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[24:43] Ryan Warwick: ... greatest gift is wisdom-
[24:44] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[24:45] Ryan Warwick: ... and, uh, we should be mentoring, advising, and, and teaching. So-
[24:50] Shannon Warwick: As advisors, you should be-
[24:52] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, but-
[24:52] Shannon Warwick: ... or as entrepreneurs and people building wealth
[24:55] Ryan Warwick: ... but every- everybody we talk to, everybody we have the, the blessing and the opportunity to sit down with-
[25:03] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[25:03] Ryan Warwick: ... has a story.
[25:04] Shannon Warwick: Yeah. Absolutely.
[25:06] Ryan Warwick: Uh, uh, everybody know, now some of them are ready to be done in that industry or, or-
[25:11] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[25:11] Ryan Warwick: ... thing that they've been doing, but, but boy, they've built up accumulated wisdom.
[25:17] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[25:18] Ryan Warwick: And this world is worse off if they just sail off into the sunset and-
[25:23] Shannon Warwick: Absolutely
[25:23] Ryan Warwick: ... and what we see is that isn't what brings them ultimate fulfillment and joy.
[25:29] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[25:29] Ryan Warwick: So I think part of us
[25:34] Ryan Warwick: guiding people is, um, helping, helping have these... W- we have these conversations around w- real worth that-
[25:41] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[25:42] Ryan Warwick: ... that maybe, maybe give them the nudge and, a- and, and encourage them to, to think about what this, what the rest of their life will, will look like.
[25:54] Shannon Warwick: So encouraging them to take this, this, this wealth, not just financial wealth, but all of this wisdom, this wealth of information, this, uh-
[26:03] Ryan Warwick: Time, talent, and treasure
[26:04] Shannon Warwick: ... time... Yeah. Time, talent, and treasure. All of this, and then use that and pay it forward to this next gen.
[26:12] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[26:13] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[26:13] Ryan Warwick: Whether that's within their own family-
[26:15] Shannon Warwick: Right
[26:16] Ryan Warwick: ... I mean, that, that's-
[26:17] Shannon Warwick: The transfer of wealth we talked about. Make sure that they're ready for that.
[26:19] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. And-
[26:20] Shannon Warwick: Teach them about that
[26:21] Ryan Warwick: ... y- and there's more than the X's and O's of-
[26:23] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[26:24] Ryan Warwick: ... uh, w- you know, we often have, uh, parents ask us to sit down with their
[26:31] Ryan Warwick: children and-
[26:32] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm. Yep
[26:33] Ryan Warwick: ... um, and they, and these could be adult children, and, and have conversations and do some planning and, and get them ready. But, but there's also just some family cultural stuff that needs to be-
[26:43] Shannon Warwick: Addressed
[26:43] Ryan Warwick: ... transitioned.
[26:44] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[26:44] Ryan Warwick: ... and, and that's, you know, in, in the system we're, we're building out, one of the, one of the things that's exciting is, is to be really proactive and intentional about building out that family culture-
[26:56] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[26:56] Ryan Warwick: ... um, which, which creates the, the legacy.
[26:59] Shannon Warwick: So I'm hearing there's a lot of, um, mentoring and discipleship surrounding-
[27:03] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[27:03] Shannon Warwick: ... this, uh, worth beyond wealth.
[27:05] Ryan Warwick: I think that we-
[27:07] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[27:07] Ryan Warwick: ... are, are really good
[27:13] Ryan Warwick: at encouraging people-
[27:15] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[27:17] Ryan Warwick: ... to experience,
[27:20] Ryan Warwick: um, life. I'll, I'll sum it up that way.
[27:24] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[27:25] Ryan Warwick: Back to this-
[27:26] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[27:28] Ryan Warwick: ... this quote that I had at the beginning.
[27:29] Shannon Warwick: You do have another quote. I knew it.
[27:32] Ryan Warwick: Uh, but, but this is, this is my quote.
[27:35] Shannon Warwick: Oh, it's your qu- okay.
[27:36] Ryan Warwick: "Wealth transformed into memories through experiences is real worth."
[27:41] Shannon Warwick: Honey, that is a good quote.
[27:42] Ryan Warwick: Thank you. I think that should be on a Hallmark card or something.
[27:46] Shannon Warwick: Yeah. So, so what you're saying then is part of this worth beyond wealth,
[27:52] Shannon Warwick: don't miss the moments, and use the money, the tool, for those moments, thinking, "I have to just keep saving, storing," right?
[28:01] Ryan Warwick: That's right.
[28:01] Shannon Warwick: And then maybe I never even get to it.
[28:05] Ryan Warwick: Right.
[28:05] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[28:07] Ryan Warwick: For a-
[28:07] Shannon Warwick: That's really freeing
[28:08] Ryan Warwick: ... for an arbitrary number.
[28:10] Shannon Warwick: For an arbitrary number.
[28:11] Ryan Warwick: Right.
[28:12] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[28:12] Ryan Warwick: John Wesley said in his, his famous sermon, he said, "Make as much as you can and give as much as you can."
[28:18] Shannon Warwick: I know. I love it.
[28:19] Ryan Warwick: So-
[28:19] Shannon Warwick: I, I, I might make a sign of that on there.
[28:21] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[28:21] Shannon Warwick: I, I might, just so you know.
[28:23] Ryan Warwick: Um, but that-
[28:24] Shannon Warwick: Okay
[28:24] Ryan Warwick: ... but see now that is, that is the right approach to it. The making of it isn't bringing satisfaction.
[28:30] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[28:31] Ryan Warwick: Probably the satisfaction is coming through the giving.
[28:34] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[28:35] Ryan Warwick: Now,
[28:37] Ryan Warwick: we are, we are called to go out and be active and use, again, time, talent, and treasure. Um, but anyway, to-
[28:43] Shannon Warwick: But let's go back. So we were on the RW experience, the humble inquiry, the real wisdom, and then the real wealth-
[28:47] Ryan Warwick: Yep
[28:48] Shannon Warwick: ... which was?
[28:49] Ryan Warwick: So real wealth are going to be the solutions and strategies, the, the execution and implementation-
[28:56] Shannon Warwick: Yes
[28:56] Ryan Warwick: ... uh, that we develop and, and deliver after studying and testing and, and analyzing, again, based on everything we've-
[29:06] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[29:06] Ryan Warwick: ... heard from the client.
[29:07] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[29:07] Ryan Warwick: And then our collective, not just me-
[29:10] Shannon Warwick: The whole team
[29:11] Ryan Warwick: ... not just, yeah-
[29:12] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[29:12] Ryan Warwick: ... everybody, everybody coming together.
[29:15] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[29:15] Ryan Warwick: Our, our team brings different, different skills, different, uh, experiences. But a lot of wisdom coming together to inform what are the strategies and solutions.
[29:27] Shannon Warwick: And in another podcast, but those years of safe money, and it's gonna be a fantastic podcast.
[29:30] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. Yep.
[29:31] Shannon Warwick: We won't... Yeah, just dun, dun, dun.
[29:32] Ryan Warwick: Just a great way of-
[29:33] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[29:33] Ryan Warwick: ... of describing and make it like-
[29:35] Shannon Warwick: You like that cliffhanger? They're gonna tune back in for that one.
[29:38] Ryan Warwick: They will tune back in-
[29:39] Shannon Warwick: I know
[29:39] Ryan Warwick: ... for years of safe money.
[29:40] Shannon Warwick: Years of safe money.
[29:42] Ryan Warwick: Trademark. Yeah.
[29:42] Shannon Warwick: Trademark.
[29:42] Ryan Warwick: Um-
[29:44] Shannon Warwick: But then it goes into real worth.
[29:46] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, after-
[29:48] Shannon Warwick: And we talked a lot about this
[29:48] Ryan Warwick: ... again, um, so, so inside of the solutions and strategies are, uh, i- is going to be investments-
[29:56] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[29:57] Ryan Warwick: ... um, borrowing and liability management-
[29:59] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[29:59] Ryan Warwick: ... non-portfolio risk management.
[30:01] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[30:01] Ryan Warwick: So that's going to be things like life insurance and, and, uh, disability insurance. And, and, and please understand, like, that's not us saying we're gonna sell that to every... We, we wanna make sure the necessary things are in place.
[30:15] Shannon Warwick: To protect them. This is not-
[30:16] Ryan Warwick: That, that family-
[30:17] Shannon Warwick: Yeah. Yeah
[30:17] Ryan Warwick: ... um, for instance, uh, you know, a successful 45-year-old is far more likely to become disabled than, than die. So do you have the right amount of disability insurance? Something that-
[30:28] Shannon Warwick: And we're saying this from exper- We had these conversations ourselves, right? And we decided you were under-insured, and so was I.
[30:36] Ryan Warwick: Yep.
[30:36] Shannon Warwick: And we had to-
[30:38] Ryan Warwick: We ourselves have a big disability policy
[30:39] Shannon Warwick: We had to, yeah.
[30:40] Ryan Warwick: Yep.
[30:40] Shannon Warwick: We had to address it.
[30:41] Ryan Warwick: To protect you and to protect the firm-
[30:43] Shannon Warwick: Right
[30:44] Ryan Warwick: ... if, if-
[30:44] Shannon Warwick: Right
[30:44] Ryan Warwick: ... something happened. Um-
[30:46] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[30:46] Ryan Warwick: ... and then estate planning and, and fiduciary services. So, uh, looking at how do we, how do we technically and, and legally do the e- estate. But now, now that we have those things set, we have the strategies, the tax efficiency and-
[31:01] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[31:01] Ryan Warwick: ... saving strategies and, and the distribution strategies all, all optimized, which has to be done over and over-
[31:10] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[31:10] Ryan Warwick: ... and over because the rules keep changing.
[31:13] Ryan Warwick: And, and your family dynamics keep changing.
[31:15] Shannon Warwick: They always change.
[31:15] Ryan Warwick: You know, every-
[31:16] Shannon Warwick: And the numbers keep changing
[31:17] Ryan Warwick: ... everything changes.
[31:17] Shannon Warwick: Yes.
[31:18] Ryan Warwick: So we're in constant communication.
[31:19] Shannon Warwick: And that's also another podcast that we'll talk about that.
[31:20] Ryan Warwick: So this is just a big circle, this, this-
[31:23] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[31:23] Ryan Warwick: ... uh, or cycle-
[31:24] Shannon Warwick: Cycle
[31:24] Ryan Warwick: ... of the RW experience. And then real worth is just how does all this come together to create, um, purpose and joy and peace in your life?
[31:37] Shannon Warwick: Right. How does it all come back to what we started the podcast talking about-
[31:40] Ryan Warwick: Yeah
[31:40] Shannon Warwick: ... the, the fulfillment? Yeah. If you could do... s- recommend one thing to shift the perspective, um, so that people could redefine success in their own lives, what would it be?
[31:49] Ryan Warwick: That's a really good question. I mean, the... what, what's so hard about the question is it's,
[31:55] Ryan Warwick: it's one thing, right?
[31:56] Shannon Warwick: I, I will say-
[31:57] Ryan Warwick: And so-
[31:57] Shannon Warwick: ... for myself-
[31:58] Ryan Warwick: Yeah, go ahead
[31:58] Shannon Warwick: ... I...
[32:00] Shannon Warwick: One thing that really... I guess maybe it's two things, but ask yourself, what are you working for?
[32:06] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[32:06] Shannon Warwick: That was a really big thing for us. What am I working for? What am I doing? Where am I and what am I doing?
[32:11] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[32:11] Shannon Warwick: And then what came to mind was, are you gaining the world but losing your soul?
[32:18] Ryan Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[32:20] Shannon Warwick: I, I, I think everybody needs to pause and ask that question, am I gaining the world and losing my soul? Because the number won't matter if you get to the end, that arbitrary number, that arbitrary finish line, and there is nobody to share it with.
[32:36] Ryan Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[32:37] Shannon Warwick: I mean, I hope you enjoy listening to the sound of your own voice.
[32:42] Shannon Warwick: I hope you enjoy your own company,
[32:44] Shannon Warwick: you know?
[32:46] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[32:46] Shannon Warwick: Because if you never poured into a relationship,
[32:49] Shannon Warwick: if you never gave, if there was nothing outside of yourself,
[32:53] Shannon Warwick: what was it for?
[32:55] Ryan Warwick: No, I think that's... So the one thing for me, I think sums up everything you just said, which is
[33:03] Ryan Warwick: l- l- look outside yourself. And, and here's, here's the thing that comes to mind. So, um-
[33:08] Shannon Warwick: And we are saying so opposite to what everybody else is saying.
[33:12] Ryan Warwick: But-
[33:12] Shannon Warwick: Look inside yourself.
[33:13] Ryan Warwick: But here's, here's the thing.
[33:15] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[33:15] Ryan Warwick: So we'll, we'll end with this story. Um-
[33:18] Shannon Warwick: Is there a quote?
[33:20] Ryan Warwick: It's not a quote, but it is, um... What did, did the counselor the other day s- uh, called it? Um,
[33:27] Ryan Warwick: the, the last name is Adler. I think he called it-
[33:30] Shannon Warwick: Yes
[33:30] Ryan Warwick: ... Ad- Adlerian, um-
[33:31] Shannon Warwick: Adlerian theory.
[33:32] Ryan Warwick: Theory.
[33:32] Shannon Warwick: Adlerian, yeah.
[33:33] Ryan Warwick: Yep, something, something like that.
[33:34] Shannon Warwick: Psychology.
[33:35] Ryan Warwick: Okay. So she-
[33:36] Shannon Warwick: But it was prior, it was prior to, uh... Was it like-
[33:38] Ryan Warwick: He was a, a contemporary of Freud. So this is-
[33:40] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[33:41] Ryan Warwick: ... you know, quite some time ago.
[33:42] Shannon Warwick: Yeah.
[33:43] Ryan Warwick: He would be... he would bring people in to his clinic, and he said, "I will only work with you if you do everything that I say."
[33:52] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[33:52] Ryan Warwick: Okay? I'm gonna work with you.
[33:54] Shannon Warwick: To cure your depression.
[33:54] Ryan Warwick: I'm gonna cure your depression. You have to do everything I say.
[33:57] Shannon Warwick: Or your depressive symptoms.
[33:58] Ryan Warwick: If you, if you won't do that, I'm not even gonna work with you.
[34:00] Shannon Warwick: Yeah. So you had to agree to his plan.
[34:02] Ryan Warwick: Okay. They come in, and they agree.
[34:03] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[34:03] Ryan Warwick: And what does... what did he say?
[34:05] Shannon Warwick: You have to go out and do something for someone else every day for two weeks.
[34:10] Ryan Warwick: With-
[34:11] Shannon Warwick: Okay
[34:11] Ryan Warwick: ... no expectation of anything in return.
[34:14] Shannon Warwick: Oh, you listened really well.
[34:15] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[34:15] Shannon Warwick: No expectation of anything in return. That's good.
[34:17] Ryan Warwick: Okay.
[34:18] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[34:18] Ryan Warwick: So how do we sum-
[34:19] Shannon Warwick: Selfless
[34:21] Ryan Warwick: ... happiness and, and
[34:24] Ryan Warwick: real worth-
[34:25] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm
[34:25] Ryan Warwick: ... can be summed up in how we are serving others, how we are blessing others-
[34:33] Shannon Warwick: And I'm trying to remember
[34:34] Ryan Warwick: ... with no expectation.
[34:35] Shannon Warwick: Did he have 100% recovery rate? I want to say he did.
[34:37] Ryan Warwick: I don't know.
[34:37] Shannon Warwick: Or near.
[34:39] Ryan Warwick: I don't want to misquote.
[34:40] Shannon Warwick: I don't either.
[34:42] Ryan Warwick: Um-
[34:42] Shannon Warwick: It's not good.
[34:45] Ryan Warwick: Yeah. I, I think that's, that's pretty fascinating because to your point, it is-
[34:51] Shannon Warwick: Yeah
[34:51] Ryan Warwick: ... the opposite of what so many people are saying. Look inside yourself, build up more, get more power, get more fame.
[34:59] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[35:00] Ryan Warwick: No amount of fame, no amount of power, no amount of money will ever satisfy.
[35:05] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[35:07] Ryan Warwick: So find, find something different and get, get off the treadmill.
[35:13] Shannon Warwick: Right. Work with an advisor who's going to listen.
[35:18] Ryan Warwick: And I would say a guide.
[35:19] Shannon Warwick: A guide.
[35:19] Ryan Warwick: Right? That's...
[35:22] Ryan Warwick: Our clients are the heroes in their stories and their journeys.
[35:25] Shannon Warwick: Mm-hmm.
[35:25] Ryan Warwick: We're just a guide.
[35:26] Shannon Warwick: Right.
[35:27] Ryan Warwick: And it, and l- l-
[35:28] Shannon Warwick: But a good guide.
[35:29] Ryan Warwick: Hopefully.
[35:30] Shannon Warwick: I hope so.
[35:31] Ryan Warwick: Yeah.
[35:31] Shannon Warwick: I mean, 'cause you're my financial advisor. If you are not good at this, I am in trouble. I have to fire you.
[35:37] Ryan Warwick: Y- if you fire me, it's... All right.
